This is a potentially risky time for any contractor as the upcoming weeks will present a whole host of potentially hazardous situations, all resting on top of piling and foundations.
Piling operations need to be safe in order to prevent accidents, not just during the driving stage, but through the entire job.
Contractors place equal focus on workers, equipment, supports and specific tasks from the onset of any job. Before any work takes place, all safety rules are explained to every employee on site, with copies of the rules handed out.
The site manager is in charge of obtaining every phone number of those who need to be contacted in the event that an accident should occur, ensure that a fully stocked first-aid kit is onsite and assure that a trained first-aid person or hospital is nearby at all times.
Safety Gear
Every worker involved on site, including visitors, must wear plastic hard hats that confirm to safety standards. All hats must be inspected before issue and any that show signs of damage have to be discarded. High visibility vests should also be worn over clothing at all times so that you are clearly seen.
Anyone involved in welding must wear specific welding helmets with a shade 10 or 12 lens depending on the length of the electrodes. If extensive welding operations are conducted, workers should protect themselves with portable shields.
Any worker handling plastic slate, creosoted piles, cement and other materials that can cause irritation should wear neoprene-coated canvas work gloves.
Onsite offices, tool houses or changing areas should be equipped with a multi-purpose dry chemical extinguisher. These extinguishers should also be resent at each crane or major piece of equipment.
