At Whitehall Cottage in Ashton-under-Lyne, we recently completed a a foundation for a new-build house, despite encountering large clay deposits. The site, with stunning views of Manchester, required pre-augured piling to ensure a stable foundation.
The Challenge
Excavation revealed thick clay layers, requiring 24 x 150mm piles with heave protection to prevent seasonal movement. Slip sleeves were installed to stop the clay from shifting the piles over time.
The Solution
Using a Vermeer pneumatic mole, we drove 150mm starter piles to a 2-metre depth. A 66.1m steel ring beam was secured with pile bars, and Clay Master was added for extra stability. On the final day, 18.9 cubic metres of C35 concrete was poured using a volumetric wagon and line pump.
The Outcome
The project was completed on schedule, providing the homeowner with a strong, reliable foundation for their new build in Ashton-under-Lyne. Thanks to meticulous planning, the clay deposits were no issue, ensuring the Manchester-based project was a success.
