Dealing with Common Pile Driving Problems

By 17/03/2019June 13th, 2023No Comments

Although it is a cost-effective and very beneficial process in order to ensure the foundations and structure of a property, pile driving deals with soil and other natural features. As a result, it is important that engineers prepare for any potential problems that may occur if the earth does not want to co-operate. Read on as we go over a few common pile driving problems and how they can be dealt with…

  1. Deeper Than Estimated

Sometimes a pile will go deeper into the earth than what was previously anticipated and this can happen due to a variety of reasons. The most common causes are an underestimation of the soil resistance or strong driving equipment. In order to fix this, restrike tests should be performed in order to reassess the soil strength.

  1. Lateral Movement

Soil displacement is a common issue in the piling industry and this means that the driving of new piles can cause previously installed ones to suffer from lateral movement. This can be rectified by a number of solutions such as redriving the piles that have moved or by predrilling the locations in order to reduce the likelihood of displacement.

  1. Out of Alignment

During the pile driving method, the piles that have already been installed can be shuffled out of alignment due to the soil conditions or hammer to pile control problems. Luckily, these can be rectified using something called a pile gate or by installing piles in locations that have fewer soil obstructions.
