We were recently contacted by DN Brickwork after foundations were excavated for a customer for a wraparound extension. DN Brickwork were ready to pour a traditional strip footing, but unfortunately building control deemed the ground unsuitable for the go ahead of a traditional strip footing and requested it to be piled.
DN Brickwork contacted Rhino Piling and informed us of the problem. To be able to best advise on the most suitable way to proceed our team conducted a site visit on the very same day as the initial phone call to gain a clear understanding of the problem at hand. Upon acceptance of our quotation Rhino Piling contacted a structural engineer whom we worked closely with to draw up plans for the piled foundation design in order for us to begin work.
Wraparound extensions are common ways to increase living space, especially on period properties that have alleyway space to the back and side of the property. Instead of leaving these unused areas as ‘dead space’ a wraparound extension’s, L-shaped design makes them perfect additions. The property in question had a large space to work with surrounding the property which the owners wanted to better utilise.
With the wraparound extension already underway and the ground already excavated in preparation, we were able to complete the piling for the extension in just 2 days with installation of the steel work to be completed the following day.
Building control were notified in advance and booked in for the day after we completed installation of the steel work, upon confirmation from building control on the same day the piled foundation had passed. We then ordered concrete to be poured. The concrete was installed the next day by Rhino Piling and was then given a full weekend to cure before DH Brickwork began laying brickwork and building up the extension.
The wraparound extension has now been fully completed and DH Brickwork were pleased to provide us with some finished photographs of the project.
