Mass Concrete Fill
As the traditional method of underpinning, the process known as Mass Concrete Fill involves excavating a worksite in a specific sequence and then filling it with concrete in order to help reinforce an existing piling foundation that was installed many years before.
Piled Raft
When a property has been affected by subsidence, a method of underpinning known as ‘Piled Rafts’ can be installed. During this process, the ground floor is taken away and small holes are created in the brickwork in order to reinforce the structure with steel piles. The excavation is then filled with concrete in order to form a new ground floor.
Pile and Needle Beam
As a combination of mini piling and steel reinforcement, Pile and Needle Beam Underpinning is used when subsidence has affected one side of a building. During this method, mini piles are placed on either side of the affected wall and are connected to a steel structure which carries and supports the load of the wall. After inspection, the structure is then covered by concrete.
Cantilever Beam and Needle
The final underpinning method is similar in many regards to the Pile and Needle Beam process; however, the work is completed outside of the property. This means that it is suitable for any and all builds because it doesn’t affect the inside. During this process, mini piles are installed on the outside of the property and then steel is used in order to cantilever (support) the weight of the build. It requires much more material to complete; however, it is actually cheaper to carry out because it is completed on the exterior of the property rather than the interior.
