The Lowdown on Pile Drivers

By 11/08/2020June 13th, 2023No Comments

Here at Rhino Piling, we are proud to say that our team are committed to each and every project we are entrusted with. After all, the foundations are the bread and butter of a property which is why they should be installed by licensed and experienced contractors in order to ensure that they meet safety regulations and have the ability to withstand the test of time. The machinery that is used in order to install piling foundations is often bulky and complex, however we’ve have decided to simplify the jargon for our readers. Read on as we go over everything there is to know about pile drivers…

What are pile foundations?

The foundations of a property provide its structure with additional support and ensures that its load is spread equally so that certain points aren’t bearing more weight than they can withstand. Piling is a type of deep foundational method that uses steel, concrete or wooden columns in order to bypass the soft soil on the surface and reinforce the weight of a building to the more robust soil below it.

Different Types of Pile Drivers

Since piles are made from heavy materials, they must be installed through the use of specialist machinery like pile drivers in order to force them to bypass the weak surface soil in an accurate manner. They do this by placing a weight between the guides to allow for vertical movement; the weight is then raised above the pile using hydraulic, steam, diesel or manual labour and then dropped at a suitable height in order to drive it into the ground. Interestingly, there are several different types of pile drivers that can be used depending on the needs of a project and the method as to which the weight is lifted above the pile. With this said, the most prevalent varieties include the diesel hammer, hydraulic hammer and hydraulic press-in hammer.

For industrial applications, it is also possible to implement a type of pile driver known as a piling rig. This large piece of machinery is often used for foundational engineering during municipal construction, slope protection, and industrial and civil building foundations. Piling rigs tend to operate through the use of hydraulic pilot controls and have a load sensor which makes them incredibly easy to control and therefore suitable for specialised circumstances.

Piling foundations are crafted from slender, columnar elements that are typically crafted from steel or reinforced concrete. As a result, specialised machinery like pile drivers are required in order to install the piles with accuracy and ensure that the deep foundations come into contact with the solid soil located deep within the earth.
