The Lowdown on Restricted Access Piling

By 17/07/2020June 13th, 2023No Comments

Piling is used in order to provide a property with a foundation and ensure that the overall structure is secure. As a result, it often requires the use of large, heavy machinery in order to install the piles deep within the ground, however there are certain situations where this is not feasible. Luckily, industry experts have prepared for this inevitability, and restricted access piling is a piling approach that can be carried out in specialist circumstances. Read on as we go over everything there is to know about restricted access piling…

Where is restricted access piling carried out?

There are many situations when the traditional machinery used to install piles cannot be utilised effectively, and this is where restricted access piling comes into play. For example, this method can be used when access and headroom is limited, when noise and vibration must be kept to minimum, in locations where weight surcharges apply, at archaeological sensitive sites, or when underpinning is being implemented from within an existing building or structure.

How is restricted access piling installed?

A casing with a diameter of 100-1080mm is placed into the ground at the required depth using a pre-determined drilling technique. After this, reinforced steel is inserted into the casing in order to provide addition support to the pile, and then concrete grout is pumped into the structure. Depending on the circumstances, the casing with either extended the full depth of the pile or it will stop short of the desired depth and the steel reinforcement will provide the necessary additional support.

What are the benefits of restricted access piling?

Restricted access piling is an excellent way to secure the structure of a property that has been deemed unsuitable for traditional piling methods. For example, it can be successful utilised in existing buildings and tunnels, in all ground/soil conditions, and areas where excessive vibrations may put the structure of nearby properties at risk. In addition to this, restricted access piling can also be carried out in a cost-effective and eco-friendly format.
